Crib mattresses

Best organic crib mattresses, compared on the brands' own numbers

Five crib mattresses from Avocado and Naturepedic, all listing GOTS certified organic materials, compared on what you can check before you buy: price, home trial, warranty, size, weight and certifications.

We have not tested these mattresses and we do not rank them on safety. Every crib mattress sold in the U.S. must meet the federal crib mattress standard, and both brands state that theirs do. What differs is the materials, the price and the terms.

Safe sleep guidance comes from pediatricians, not mattress brands. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies sleep on their backs on "a firm, flat noninclined surface" without soft bedding (AAP, June 21, 2022). This page compares what the brands publish about their crib mattresses. It is not safe sleep advice or medical advice. For anything about your baby's sleep, talk to your pediatrician.

Where the brands' own pages disagree

Avocado: the crib mattress page calls the trial 30 nights, and Avocado's sleep trial page calls it 30 days. The sleep trial page lists a $99 return fee per mattress without a separate figure for cribs, so confirm the return cost before you buy. The page also gives two places of manufacture: its GOTS certified factory in Los Angeles, and "Assembled in Fullerton, California" on the legal label.

Avocado Eco Organic: the product page gives 242 coils in one place and 241 in its description, and both a 1 inch and a half inch coconut husk pad in different sections.

Naturepedic: the crib mattress pages give the innerspring as 150 coils in one place and 144 in another. They also say "no latex" in the materials, while one section describes comfort layers "made with organic latex foam." Naturepedic's returns page describes the 100 night trial without naming crib mattresses, and adds that you should sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights first. We go by the 100 nights on each crib product page and suggest confirming the terms at checkout.

Naturepedic Breathable: the product page shows $295.20, a sale price against $369.00 regular, while its comparison table shows "From $369.00."

In detail

The five crib mattresses, one by one

Our pick

Avocado Organic Crib Mattress, the most organic materials

  • 30 night trial
  • 25 year limited warranty
  • Infant side and toddler side
  • Who it is forParents who want certified organic latex, wool and cotton throughout, with no coils.
  • Who it is not forAnyone who wants a long trial. At 30 nights it shares the shortest trial here with the Eco Organic.
  • Honest weaknessThe 30 night trial and the 28 lb weight, the heaviest crib mattress we cover.

The infant side, for newborn to one year, is firmer by design: tightly quilted GOTS certified organic cotton over a 3 inch GOLS certified organic coconut husk pad infused with GOLS certified organic latex. The toddler side, for year one to four, adds a 2 inch layer of GOLS certified organic Dunlop latex over a half inch coconut husk pad. A GOTS certified organic wool layer wraps the whole mattress, under an organic cotton cover with 3 percent elastane. Avocado states that no polyurethane, polyethylene, steel coils or glue are used.

Certifications listed on the product page are GOTS, GOLS, GREENGUARD Gold, UL Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verified, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I. Avocado states that both sides have been independently tested and meet the U.S. crib mattress standard, 16 CFR 1241, which incorporates ASTM F2933.

It measures 28 by 52 inches and 5.5 inches high, weighs 28 lbs and ships flat rather than rolled. The trial is 30 nights, one per household, and shipping, delivery and setup fees are not refunded. The warranty is 25 year limited.

Naturepedic Classic Organic Cotton Crib Mattress, the best value with long terms

  • 100 night trial
  • Lifetime limited warranty
  • Single stage or 2 stage
  • Who it is forParents who want the lowest price shown, a 100 night trial, a lifetime limited warranty and a light mattress with a waterproof surface.
  • Who it is not forAnyone set on organic latex. The Classic's certified organic material is its cotton.
  • Honest weaknessIts own pages conflict on the coil count and on whether it contains latex.

The Classic comes in three models: the MC24, a lightweight single stage mattress at 10 lbs; the MC34, a lightweight 2 stage at 11 lbs; and the MC32, a 2 stage with a steel innerspring at 19 lbs. On the 2 stage models the firmer side is for infants and the slightly less firm toddler side is typically used from about one year. Naturepedic lists GOTS certified organic cotton fabric and fill, a waterproof surface of polyethylene made from sugarcane, and either food grade polyethylene foam (lightweight) or steel coils (innerspring), with PLA layers.

Certifications listed are GOTS, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold, PETA-Approved Vegan, UL Non-Detectable PFAS Validated and UL Formaldehyde Free validated. Naturepedic states that it "Meets CPSC & AAP guidelines for crib mattress firmness." The trial is 100 nights with a full refund, and the warranty is lifetime limited.

Avocado Eco Organic Crib Mattress, organic wool and cotton over coils

  • 30 night trial
  • 10 year limited warranty
  • Standard or dual sided
  • Who it is forParents who want Avocado's organic wool and cotton at a lower price than its Organic Crib Mattress.
  • Who it is not forAnyone who wants a long warranty. At 10 year limited it is the shortest here.
  • Honest weaknessThe 30 night trial and the 10 year limited warranty, against 25 years on Avocado's Organic Crib Mattress.

The Eco Organic is Avocado's lower priced crib mattress, built on 242 individually wrapped recycled steel coils with no latex foam layer. Over the coils sit a 1 inch coconut husk pad infused with GOLS certified latex, an organic wool layer and GOTS certified organic cotton ticking. It is 4.75 inches high and weighs 21 lbs in the standard version or 23 lbs dual sided. On the dual sided version the firm side is the infant side, and Avocado states that both sides meet 16 CFR 1241.

Certifications listed are GOTS, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE and GREENGUARD Gold, which the page lists for the innerspring unit. The trial is 30 nights, one per household, and the warranty is 10 year limited, a much shorter term than the 25 years on the Organic Crib Mattress.

Naturepedic Breathable Organic 2-Stage, the step up in Naturepedic's range

  • 2 stage
  • Who it is forParents who want Naturepedic's terms and its Breathable line, at the lower of its two Breathable prices.

Certifications listed are GOTS, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold, PETA-Approved Vegan, UL Non-Detectable PFAS and UL Formaldehyde Free.

Before you buy

Questions parents ask

How do these crib mattresses compare on safety?

We do not rank crib mattresses on safety, and we do not test them. Every crib mattress sold in the U.S. must meet the federal crib mattress standard, and both brands here state that theirs do. How a baby sleeps matters too: the AAP recommends a firm, flat surface with no soft bedding. Our guide to the federal standard explains what the rule covers.

Which side do I use for a newborn?

The firmer side, which every two sided model here labels as the infant side. Avocado describes its Organic Crib Mattress infant side as for newborn to one year, and its toddler side as for year one to four. Naturepedic says to use the firmer side for infants and the toddler side from about one year. Follow the label on the mattress you buy.

What makes a crib mattress organic?

Certification of its materials. All five here list GOTS, the organic textile standard, and the Avocado models list GOLS for their latex as well. A certification covers the materials it names, not the whole mattress unless the brand says so. Our certifications guide explains each one.

Which has the longest trial?

Every Naturepedic crib mattress we checked gives 100 nights with a full refund. Both Avocado crib mattresses give 30 nights, one per household.

Why are the Naturepedic mattresses smaller?

Naturepedic lists 27.25 by 51.625 inches and Avocado lists 28 by 52 inches. Both are sold for full size cribs. Check your crib maker's instructions for the mattress size it calls for.

Why only two brands?

Avocado and Naturepedic are already covered on this site, and both make certified organic crib mattresses. We would rather cover two brands carefully than list many we have not checked.

Are these prices current?

They are the prices shown on each brand's own website on November 7, 2026. Several were sale prices at the time. The price that counts is the one at the brand's checkout on the day you buy.
