Head to head

Avocado vs Naturepedic crib mattress: organic latex or organic cotton with a waterproof surface

Both list GOTS certified organic materials, both are two sided for infants and toddlers, and both brands state that their crib mattresses meet CPSC firmness requirements. The difference is what is inside, and how long you get to decide.

The Avocado Organic Crib Mattress is built from certified organic latex, wool, cotton and coconut husk, with no coils. The Naturepedic Classic puts GOTS certified organic cotton over a lightweight core or a steel innerspring, with a waterproof surface. It costs less than half as much as shown, gives a 100 night trial against Avocado's 30, and weighs 10 to 19 lbs against 28.

Safe sleep guidance comes from pediatricians, not mattress brands. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies sleep on their backs on "a firm, flat noninclined surface" without soft bedding (AAP, June 21, 2022). This page compares what the brands publish about their crib mattresses. It is not safe sleep advice or medical advice. For anything about your baby's sleep, talk to your pediatrician.

Where the brands' own pages disagree

Avocado: the crib mattress page calls the trial 30 nights, and Avocado's sleep trial page calls it 30 days. The sleep trial page lists a $99 return fee per mattress without a separate figure for cribs, so confirm the return cost before you buy. The page also gives two places of manufacture: its GOTS certified factory in Los Angeles, and "Assembled in Fullerton, California" on the legal label.

Naturepedic: the crib mattress pages give the innerspring as 150 coils in one place and 144 in another. They also say "no latex" in the materials, while one section describes comfort layers "made with organic latex foam." Naturepedic's returns page describes the 100 night trial without naming crib mattresses, and adds that you should sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights first. We go by the 100 nights on each crib product page and suggest confirming the terms at checkout.

Our pick

Avocado Organic Crib Mattress, the organic latex pick

  • 30 night trial
  • 25 year limited warranty
  • Infant side and toddler side
  • Who it is forParents who want certified organic latex, wool and cotton throughout, with no coils.
  • Who it is not forAnyone who wants a long trial. At 30 nights it is the shortest here.
  • Honest weaknessThe 30 night trial, and the weight: at 28 lbs it is the heaviest crib mattress we cover, which matters every time you change the sheet.

The infant side, for newborn to one year, is firmer by design: tightly quilted GOTS certified organic cotton over a 3 inch GOLS certified organic coconut husk pad infused with GOLS certified organic latex. The toddler side, for year one to four, adds a 2 inch layer of GOLS certified organic Dunlop latex over a half inch coconut husk pad. A GOTS certified organic wool layer wraps the whole mattress, under an organic cotton cover with 3 percent elastane. Avocado states that no polyurethane, polyethylene, steel coils or glue are used.

Certifications listed on the product page are GOTS, GOLS, GREENGUARD Gold, UL Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verified, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I. Avocado states that both sides have been independently tested and meet the U.S. crib mattress standard, 16 CFR 1241, which incorporates ASTM F2933.

It measures 28 by 52 inches and 5.5 inches high, weighs 28 lbs and ships flat rather than rolled. The trial is 30 nights, one per household, and shipping, delivery and setup fees are not refunded. The warranty is 25 year limited.

Naturepedic Classic Organic Cotton Crib Mattress, the light one with long terms

  • 100 night trial
  • Lifetime limited warranty
  • Single stage or 2 stage
  • Who it is forParents who want the lowest price shown, a 100 night trial, a lifetime limited warranty and a light mattress with a waterproof surface.
  • Who it is not forAnyone set on organic latex. The Classic's certified organic material is its cotton. The core is polyethylene foam or steel coils.
  • Honest weaknessIts own pages conflict on two details, the coil count and whether it contains latex, as the note under the table explains.

The Classic comes in three models: the MC24, a lightweight single stage mattress at 10 lbs; the MC34, a lightweight 2 stage at 11 lbs; and the MC32, a 2 stage with a steel innerspring at 19 lbs. On the 2 stage models the firmer side is for infants and the slightly less firm toddler side is typically used from about one year. Naturepedic lists GOTS certified organic cotton fabric and fill, a waterproof surface of polyethylene made from sugarcane, and either food grade polyethylene foam (lightweight) or steel coils (innerspring), with PLA layers.

Certifications listed are GOTS, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold, PETA-Approved Vegan, UL Non-Detectable PFAS Validated and UL Formaldehyde Free validated. Naturepedic states that it "Meets CPSC & AAP guidelines for crib mattress firmness." It measures 27.25 by 51.625 inches and 6 inches high, with weight limits of 80 lbs for the lightweight models and 100 lbs for the innerspring.

The trial is 100 nights with a full refund, and the warranty is lifetime limited.
