Crib mattress trials and warranties, compared: 30 nights or 100

Crib mattress terms vary more than the prices do. Naturepedic gives 100 nights on every crib model we checked. Avocado gives 30, with fees it does not refund. The warranties run from 10 years to lifetime.

This page sets out each term as the brand states it, the conditions attached, and where the brands' own pages disagree, so you know what to confirm before you pay.

Where the brands' own pages disagree

Avocado: the crib mattress page calls the trial 30 nights, and Avocado's sleep trial page calls it 30 days. The sleep trial page lists a $99 return fee per mattress without a separate figure for cribs, so confirm the return cost before you buy. The page also gives two places of manufacture: its GOTS certified factory in Los Angeles, and "Assembled in Fullerton, California" on the legal label.

One conflict to know about before you rely on the 30 nights. Avocado's sleep trial page says customers must give their new mattress at least 30 days before requesting a return. Paired with a 30 night crib trial, that would leave almost no window to ask for a return. The trial page does not say whether that sentence covers crib mattresses, and we could not find a crib specific answer on Avocado's site. Read it as unresolved, and confirm with Avocado before you buy if the trial matters to you.

Naturepedic: the crib mattress pages give the innerspring as 150 coils in one place and 144 in another. They also say "no latex" in the materials, while one section describes comfort layers "made with organic latex foam." Naturepedic's returns page describes the 100 night trial without naming crib mattresses, and adds that you should sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights first. We go by the 100 nights on each crib product page and suggest confirming the terms at checkout.

Avocado's sleep trial page also names a Luxury Avocado Crib Mattress with a 100 day trial. Avocado sells it as the Luxury Organic Crib Mattress, a separate product from the Organic Crib Mattress compared here. It is not covered on this site.

Read carefully

The trials

A crib mattress trial can be shorter in practice than it looks. If you buy before the birth, the nights may run out before your baby has slept on the mattress much at all.

Naturepedic states a 100 night trial with a full refund on each crib product page we checked: the Classic, the Breathable 2-Stage and the Breathable Ultra 2-Stage. Its returns page adds that you should sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights first, and its crib product pages list free shipping and free returns. The returns page excludes its Halcyon line and bassinet pads, neither of which is a crib mattress.

Avocado states a 30 night trial on both crib mattresses, starting when you receive it and limited to one per household. Shipping, delivery and setup fees are not refunded. Avocado's sleep trial page says products must be in a condition suitable for donation, with the law tag attached, and lists a $99 return fee per mattress without a separate figure for cribs. Confirm the return cost with Avocado before you buy.

Read carefully

The warranties

Naturepedic states a lifetime limited warranty on its crib mattresses, on each product page and on its warranty page. The full coverage terms are in a separate crib mattress warranty document linked from that page.

Avocado states a 25 year limited warranty on its Organic Crib Mattress and a 10 year limited warranty on its Eco Organic Crib Mattress.

A warranty covers defects as its document defines them. It is a contract, not a promise about how long a mattress will be used, so read the document for the model you buy.

On the 2 stage models the firmer side is for infants and the slightly less firm toddler side is typically used from about one year. Naturepedic lists GOTS certified organic cotton fabric and fill, a waterproof surface of polyethylene made from sugarcane, and either food grade polyethylene foam (lightweight) or steel coils (innerspring), with PLA layers.

The trial is 100 nights with a full refund, and the warranty is lifetime limited. The Breathable and Breathable Ultra 2-Stage models carry the same terms at $295.20 and $367.20 as shown.
