Organic mattress certifications explained: what each label checks

Mattress certifications check different things. Some confirm organic content, some test chemical emissions, some screen ingredients, and one confirms there are no animal materials. A long list is only useful once you know which is which.

Below, each label is described in its own standard's words, checked on November 7, 2026, with the mattresses in our comparison that list it.

Read carefully

Four kinds of label

Organic content. GOLS and GOTS say how much of the latex or the textiles is certified organic, and trace it through the supply chain.

Emissions. GREENGUARD Gold, eco-INSTITUT and UL Formaldehyde Free test what a finished product releases into the air.

Harmful substances and ingredients. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and MADE SAFE test for or screen out listed substances.

Animal materials. PETA Approved Vegan confirms vegan alternatives to animal derived materials.

None of these labels is a medical claim, and none says a mattress will improve your sleep or health. They describe materials and testing, nothing more.

In detail

The three longest lists

Deepest list

Avocado Green Mattress, the deepest list

  • 1 year trial, returns after 30 days
  • 25 year limited warranty
  • Firm, Medium or Plush
  • Who it is forBuyers who want the deepest certification list and a full year to decide.
  • Who it is not forAnyone set on an all latex build with no coils.
  • Honest weaknessReturns open only after 30 days, and a return carries a $99 fee.

Avocado's argument is certification depth. The Green Mattress is certified organic at the finished product level under GOTS, and the brand lists five further standards for the whole mattress, including OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold and UL Formaldehyde Free. The latex is GOLS certified organic Dunlop over up to 1,379 individually wrapped coils in seven zones, needle tufted by hand in California.

The Medium feel carries 3 inches of latex at 11 inches high and is the brand's most popular. Plush carries 5 inches at 13 inches high and is positioned for side sleepers. Firm carries 2 inches at 11.5 inches. The trial is a full year, with a $99 return fee, and the warranty runs 25 years with the first 10 non prorated.

Naturepedic EOS Classic Organic Vegan, including vegan

  • 100 night trial
  • 25 year limited warranty
  • Five levels, Plush to Extra Firm
  • Who it is forA buyer who wants certified organic materials without wool or other animal products, or partners who want each side set differently.
  • Who it is not forAnyone for whom price comes first. Its Queen price at checking was the highest in our comparison.
  • Honest weaknessThe Queen price shown, $3,679.20, was a sale price, so expect it to move.

Most organic mattresses use wool as their flame barrier. This EOS Classic variant uses none, which makes it the pick for a buyer who wants certified organic materials without animal products. Fire protection comes from a plant based PLA batting, and the certifications on the brand's page include GOTS, GOLS, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, PETA Approved Vegan, GREENGUARD Gold and UL Formaldehyde Free.

It is also the most adjustable mattress in our comparison. Five firmness levels, the option to set each side of the bed differently, and a modular build of a 3 inch organic latex comfort layer over an 8 inch encased coil layer, inside a zippered organic cotton encasement. Inside the 100 night trial, comfort layers can be exchanged free instead of returning the bed, under a 25 year limited warranty.

PlushBeds Botanical Bliss, organic latex and textiles

  • 100 night return trial
  • Separate 365 Night Comfort Guarantee for firmness adjustment
  • Warranty: confirm with the brand
  • Medium (5.5 of 10) or Medium Firm (8 of 10)
  • Who it is forAnyone who wants all latex and certified organic textiles, and the most latex for the money.
  • Who it is not forSomeone coming from a spring mattress who wants that familiar feel. The hybrids suit them better.
  • Honest weaknessThe paperwork. PlushBeds' own pages describe its trial and its warranty in more than one way, as the note under the table explains.

The Botanical Bliss is latex from top to bottom and certified organic in both its latex and its textiles. The build is six layers: a GOTS certified organic cotton cover, GOTS certified organic wool, a GOTS certified organic cotton panel, a natural latex comfort layer, a GOLS certified organic latex comfort layer on the 12 inch model, and a 6 inch GOLS certified organic latex support core. There are no coils and no synthetic foam layers to soften over time.

Certifications listed on the product page are GOLS, GOTS for both the cotton and the wool, GREENGUARD Gold, eco-INSTITUT and Control Union.
